Let’s get right into it.
The newsletter is going fantastically, and honestly, September was one of my best months for engagement and subscriptions. Thanks to everyone who commented, liked, or shared my writing with others—it does help in ways that aren’t immediately visible.
Before Substack, I always had a problem keeping up with whatever form my “blog” took. For all its warts, Substack has helped me stay on task with writing and seeing many cool people writing things I like.
It does feel like a community is being built here, which, as you may or may not know, was one of my core tenets for writing in 2024.
All that said, there are some things I’m looking forward to as we careen off the edge of 2024 and towards 2025:
Content Scheduling
I think I’ve finally found my groove with my posting schedule: I post an article each Tuesday morning. That’s proven to be pretty doable without causing any extra stress.
I’m going to keep up with that schedule and, gods willing, commit to posting one free article every Tuesday morning for as long as I a) am running Grinning Rat and b) have something to say that isn’t a waste of your time.
With that said, we should talk about a new thing I’m looking to introduce for those of you who want a little more:
Paid Subscriptions
Before anybody panics, let’s remember what I stated before:
There will always be a free weekly post on the blog.
If you’ve been reading the past few months, you’re already getting this. Nothing changes for you. I’m not pay-walling my previously written content because that feels closer to holding my content hostage than offering you something cool.
It gives me the ick, as the kids say.
However…
I will offer Paid Subscriptions at either $5/mo or $60/yr.
What do you get with a paid subscription?
A paid-only [ADDENDUM] post that accompanies each weekly free post that goes into deeper detail, offers different opinions, guest appearances, or whatever else I think is cool that week
A weekly table of random encounters, items, monsters, NPCs, etc., for Ädamίr
For yearly subscribers, a 10% discount on any crowdfunded project I produce (that stacks for each year you’re subscribed)
Your name at the top of every post as a public “Thank You!”
Knowledge that you are preventing me from falling into destitution and/or supplementing my caffeine habit
Some of you may note that, technically, I’ve been offering paid subscriptions since I started. This is true, but until now there hasn’t been much incentive to do so other than supporting me (which, apparently, some of you feel I’m worth it). Now there will be tangible benefits to becoming a paid subscriber.
All that being said, I also know that paying for another fucking thing is super annoying and a pain in the ass.
So…
Introductory Membership
If you’d like to try becoming a member for a significantly cheaper price, you can subscribe now to get 40% off your subscription… forever.
That means you can become a paid subscriber for just $3/mo or $36/yr and that will be your locked-in price as long as you’re a member and as long as I’m still writing.
It doesn’t matter if my prices increase or if I become a full-time writer; you’ll pay $3/mo. Not a bad deal.
Founder Status
Of course, you can decide that paying less is for the plebs and become a Founder instead for $100/yr.
I will say you should not do this. Its literally the same as the normal paid subscription. I don’t plan on offering anything extra other than bragging rights for Founders, so you’re paying $40 extra per year to have a little “Founder” title next to your name when you comment.
Please don’t do this. It’s very silly and will make others question your sanity.
It may even attract bandits looking to exploit your wealth of riches.
I cannot keep you safe from them.
Other Thoughts to Close Out
I’ll probably be lightly focusing my writing on Ädamίr and its development for the near future as its top of mind
That being said, I’ll probably be doing a few other articles here and there about some of the thoughts I had in August and September
Expect like a 70/30 split of Ädamίr content vs. other content
I want to team up with more writers to do crossposting and other collaborative publishing on Substack so, if you’re interested, shoot me a message here or at my email (najo.whit@gmail.com)
These will probably be more general-purpose articles (aka, non-Ädamίr) based on game design or other projects
I’m debating on doing a podcast where I read my posts out loud and maybe chat with some guests here and there, but that’s such a commitment and extra work each week that I’m not sure it’s worth it
If I hit a certain number of paid subscribers and I’m seeing a lot of people clamoring for it, I’ll come back and think it through
That’s it from me! If you have questions, please comment below or message me directly.
Seeya,
- Nate
